Francesca Brevini

Francesca Brevini is a multidisciplinary visual artist, born in 1998. She grew up in the province of Reggio Emilia and earned a degree in Set Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where she went on to complete a Master’s degree in Visual Arts. Her research focuses on the imaginative potential of art, exploring imaginary spaces, dreamlike and fairytale dimensions as forms of resistance to reality. Her practice moves fluidly between painting, illustration, animation, and theater, drawing inspiration from the unique qualities of each medium. Through visual and painterly marks, she constructs a ritual space — a liminal territory where memory and invention, spirit and matter coexist. Her works evoke suspended atmospheres, inhabited by hybrid creatures, archaic symbols, and unknown presences.

"My painting practice stems from an urgency: the need to explore language where it breaks, where it becomes contaminated, where it opens to uncoded forms. I paint as if writing in a forgotten language, tracing signs that are crossing-grounds, where subjectivity, gesture, and body dissolve into an unstable, porous landscape that refuses the boundaries between subject and background, between identity and otherness. The body — when it appears — is never a center, but a field. It undergoes interference, is crossed by lines, by forces. It is a vulnerable, open space, not one that represents, but one that allows itself to be transformed. The mark is the same: it is not ornament nor calligraphy, but an ‘archaeological’ attempt to resurface from a lost language. In this sense, each painting is a fragment, an incomplete map, a trace of something that perhaps can never be fully spoken. Painting, to me, is not representation but experience. A place where instability becomes method, and ambiguity is not a limit but a breath. I inhabit this space as one inhabits a dream: by listening."

“In my practice, the pictorial language becomes a tool for exploring the stratification of the sign — its multiplication and division. Painting becomes a laboratory of the possible, an open space where gesture, matter, and concept intertwine. I use the sign freely, evoking proto-archaic, ideogram-like forms of writing. Painting merges with language, generating a nonlinear visual code that moves between evocation and symbolic construction. My compositions are dense and layered, guided by a principle of controlled instability. The tension between instinctive gesture and rational construction produces a precarious yet vital equilibrium. It’s not only an aesthetic, but an ethics of process: inhabiting painting without fixing it, keeping open the possibility of change. The recurring themes in my work — subjectivity, language, crossing — emerge as fragments of a discourse never fully completed. The signs appear as attempts to name what escapes, as traces of a forgotten or never-born language. Painting thus becomes the site of a partial, fragile emergence, where meaning is generated through movement and transformation.”
