Manuel Neri Studio

CENTER

When you cross the ancient little bridge, you come across an unimpressive gate, an entrance to a workshop, a sculpture studio, a place of artists and everyday life in Carrara.

It's a place by the river, with a small waterfall and an unimaginable fisherman. As you pass through the gate, a world opens up that seems like a lost paradise. A world that speaks of other times, of the past, of memories, of stories that hold something sacred in our memory. Something that must not be lost. The studio was established in the mid-1960s, during a time when Carrara probably reached its peak beauty and attraction for artists.

People came from all over the world to discover, to learn, to create their own sculptures, which are now exhibited in international museums and foundations.

Many have stayed. One of them is our dear Robert Gove, who is now over 80 years old.

He came on a trip with his elderly mother visiting Europe, Italy, and Carrara. In front of the historic Nicoli Studios in Piazza San Francesco, he saw the sculptures, observed the sculptors, and the view of the mountain. And there, he fell madly in love.

Just as it happens to artists. So he called his master and artist friend in America and invited him to open a sculpture studio in Italy. That artist was Manuel Neri, a Californian sculptor and teacher at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and the San Francisco Art Institute. With him came his students, assistants, and artist friends.

Robert has been here for almost 40 years now, known in the city for his excellent Carrara dialect, his means of transportation, and the paper hat he makes every day with the latest issue of the Herold's newspaper.

Today, he mainly shares the studio with two artists and hosts passing sculptors. Giuliano Orlandi, born in Carrara in 1973, a sculptor and artisan at the historic SEM Studio in Pietrasanta. Federico Ponzuelo, an artist from Madrid, completes this trio.
