The S.G.F. sculpture workshop was founded in Torano, a village above Carrara, in 1971 by three young stone carvers -- Silvio Santini, Paolo Grassi and Mario Fruendi -- and quickly became a meeting point for sculptors from around the world. In this way the acronym S.G.F. took on the expression and meaning of "Scuola di Torano", an informal community of artists, sculptors and marble craftspeople who found in this place a fertile ground for turning ideas into works of art, discovering the professionalism of those three skilled and courageous stone carvers. The three friends, all born in Carrara, first met on the school benches of the "Pietro Tacca" Professional Institute for Marble in the city and, not yet knowing the destiny that would bind them in a close working relationship, completed their studies. The working experience of the three young men continued along different paths, though all of them oriented towards mastering the finest techniques of sculpture.
