InBeccheria Art Space by Enzo Tinarelli
(History of the space as an atelier and exhibition gallery)
When Tinarelli moved from Ravenna to Carrara to teach at the local Academy of Fine Arts, in 1992 he acquired, in 1998, a small historic semi-basement space in the center of Carrara, 55 sqm in need of restoration, located on Via Beccheria. For several years, the space remained inactive due to the lengthy restoration and redevelopment carried out with the PietraViva company. From the 2000s onward, the space was enriched with the creation of mosaic pavements depicting draperies and carpets. The space was occasionally opened to the public during art events in Carrara such as Marbleweek and later during Carrara Studi Aperti.
The space officially opened in 2012 with a solo exhibition by the artist. Starting in 2013, exhibitions focused on the language and research of mosaic art were set up under the name "Musivamente"; such as the exhibition 16 mosaics by 16 artists (curated by Giovanna Riu); in 2014 Nella cava nel cuore with G. Guiso and E. Tinarelli; and in 2018 the solo exhibition of the great Japanese mosaic artist Toyoharu Kii. Since 2021, the gallery has been permanently set up for the project Roses for Carrara Project by Suzanne Spahi and Enzo Tinarelli, featuring mosaic roses arriving periodically from around the world (2021–2024) and displayed until the mural installation inaugurated on November 30, 2024, on Via del Cavatore in Carrara. Occasionally, small mosaic workshops are held by Suzanne Spahi.

Weaving Mosaic: from Ravenna to Carrara, with a stopover in Cairo
23 Contemporary Mosaic Artists
Curated by: Marianna Alfano, Suzanne Spahi, Enzo Tinarelli
The art space InBeccheria, as part of Carrara Studi Aperti 2025, presents a group exhibition of small-format contemporary mosaics representing the artistic research of artists trained in the “Ravenna school.”
The works, created specifically for Carrara Studi Aperti, aim to offer a cross-section of contemporary mosaic art, enriched by the presence of two guest artists from Cairo in the marble capital of Carrara.
The eleventh edition of the event, which opens the doors of Carrara’s creative workshops and is part of the UNESCO-recognized Creative Cities network, this year invites us on a journey that crosses borders. The works, each measuring 20x20 centimeters, serve as symbolic stages along a route that includes: Ravenna, Carrara, Cairo.
Mosaics, as we know, are made of tesserae — pieces of marble, glass, enamel, and other diverse materials — that come together, tilt, and communicate. But tessere in Italian is also a verb: to weave. It brings to mind the intertwining of threads — the warp and the weft.
A Penelope who weaves without unraveling; tesserae that connect a past rooted in technique with a present of exploration and experimentation. Weaving relationships through a single language — that of mosaic — which speaks in many dialects, as varied as the artistic approaches and formal choices of the artists. This collective exhibition offers a borderless vision of our time.
